I`d say it`s...

2010年3月8日 (月)

They say the Eskimos in Alaska have 100 different words to describe snow. Yesterday, while snowboarding I was wondering which word an Eskimo might use to describe the conditions. I don`t know what they would say, but in English the conditions were slushy (zaku zaku in Japanese). Perhaps you`ve heard this word before. Slush is essentially partially melted snow and ice mixed with water. These days, when the sun shines warmly for a few hours, the sidewalks become slushy (making it difficult to ride my bike...). At Rusutsu yesterday, here and there the snow was soft and wet: slushy spring conditions. Lot`s of fun! I hope you`ve got good boots for the slushy city sidewalks that are coming soon!

Pessimist or Optimist?

2010年2月25日 (木)

Hey up! So snowboard season is coming to a close and I`m looking forward to some spring cycling. Now I`m planning my cycle route for golden week.  Im hoping to do maybe a 6 day tour.  If I dont start planning it, I`ll be depressed that snowboard season is coming to a close.  I think it`s important to look ahead with optimism. Are you an optimist or pessimist?  (you can`t cheat and say you`re a "realist", which is a mixture of the two).  Anyway, hope you`re all not getting too wet with the slushy snow.  Have a good one !

Spring?

2010年2月24日 (水)

Hello everyone,

How are you? I'm doing well, especially because spring is in the air! The last couple of days in Sapporo have been wonderfully warm, and I feel like a bear coming out of hibernation:) I know what you're thinking, it's Sapporo, it's only February, and there's bound to be another snow storm or two before spring truly appears. But it's a nice reminder of what's to come. And next month is March! We have a saying in English:
"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb." Meaning, March starts out  with harsh, unpleasant weather, but it ends mild and warm. Hopefully this is true in Sapporo as well, especially the latter part! I wonder if there are any similar sayings in Japanese?

Please enjoy the "spring" weather while it lasts!

Sincerely, Luella

Hey everyone! Hope everyone is having a good week.  Recently heaps of my friends have injured themselves doing winter sports. This year Im being extra careful because (touch wood!!!!) I dont want to break anything. It must be super stressful to go to the doctor in a foreign country and Im lucky that ive never really had to.  So today my diary message goes out to all those with injuries.... get well soon x

Ice Fall Festival

2010年2月11日 (木)

Hey there everyone. Have you ever been to Sounkyo? I went there last week to snowboard, but the ropeway was closed.  It was -15 at night, but I braved the cold and went to the Ice Fall Festival. It was very beautiful but far too cold to take pictures, so I hope you like this one!!!!
