Hello, my name is Luella. I`m from the United States. I`ve been living in Sapporo since December 2005, and I really love it! I`m interested in living abroad and learning about different cultures and languages. I enjoy teaching English conversation because it gives me an opportunity to meet and talk with all kinds of people. My hobby is designing and making jewelry from stone beads and other natural materials. In my free time I like to read books, study Japanese and spend time at the beach-I love the ocean. Sapporo is a great city because it`s convenient and safe, and there is a lot of beautiful nature nearby. And the food here in Hokkaido is wonderful, in my opinion some of the best in Japan! I look forward to meeting you.

Summer Garden
2010年7月21日 (水)
I sure love summer! I love the long, warm days, swimming at the beach, and not having to wear layers and layers of clothing. Another great thing about summer is my garden. I've been eating out of it for the past month, and it's fantastic. So far I've harvested cucumbers, turnips, zucchini, a couple kinds of leaf vegetables and lettuce, and a variety of herbs. The tomatoes are still green but they should turn red and sweet any day.
This year the garden seems to be doing a bit better than last year. I think the reason is that in the spring I made a seaweed fertilizer and mixed it into the soil before planting my seeds and seedlings. Seaweed fertilizer is easy to make and plants seem to love it. I found the recipe online. My melon plant is absolutely thriving!

Hello everyone,
Last week I had a much appreciated four day holiday. I spent time doing a lot of things I had been wanting to get done in the past few weeks. I made some jewelry, caught up with my email, and did some much-needed cleaning in my apartment.
But the highlight of my vacation was going to the Round One game center with my little sister. I must admit I'm not fond of games-even as a child I considered games to be something of a conspiracy organized by my teachers and fellow school mates in order to torture me. But I did enjoy my time at Round One.
For one thing, I hadn't spent time with my little sister in quite awhile-she's fourteen years old, and has just entered her third year of junior high school, so needless to say she is quite busy with her studies. So, it was nice to have a chance to spend time together, just the two of us.
We started with a game of pool. Though I am a meager pool player myself, I was able to teach her some of the basic principles of the game. After that we played a game of badminton-I'm not sure who won as neither of us seemed to be keeping track of the score. We moved on to archery, then on down to the arcade, where we proceeded to play all sorts of games, most of which I had never heard. Since my Japanese reading skills are minimal, my sister had to do all of the reading for me, figure out how the games worked, and teach me how to play them. She was very patient with me, which was nice ;) Finally, we each donned a pair of inline skates to do a few laps around the skate rink.
We ended our adventure at my favorite Indian restaurant, Mayoor, (North 23, West 5) where I introduced my little sister to some of my favorite Indian snacks: samosas and papad with yogurt and vegetable salad (raita), which she really seemed to enjoy.
Until last week, I hadn't really played in a long time. It was nice to know that even as an "adult" I can still enjoy a day of good, clean fun from time to time.
Thanks, see you next time!

Spring?
2010年2月24日 (水)
Hello everyone,
How are you? I'm doing well, especially because spring is in the air! The last couple of days in Sapporo have been wonderfully warm, and I feel like a bear coming out of hibernation:) I know what you're thinking, it's Sapporo, it's only February, and there's bound to be another snow storm or two before spring truly appears. But it's a nice reminder of what's to come. And next month is March! We have a saying in English:
"March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb." Meaning, March starts out with harsh, unpleasant weather, but it ends mild and warm. Hopefully this is true in Sapporo as well, especially the latter part! I wonder if there are any similar sayings in Japanese?
Please enjoy the "spring" weather while it lasts!
Sincerely, Luella
