!0,000 hours?

2017年6月7日 (水)

In his 2008 book “Outliers” Malcolm Gladwell says that “10,000 hours is the magic number of greatness.” Literally interpreted, it means it takes 10,000 hours of practice (or roughly 3 hours a day for 10 years) to master a particular skill. While this sounds like it could be true, it doesn’t actually translate so neatly into reality. I could start practicing ballet for three hours a day for the next ten years, but the chances that I will master the art of ballet are highly unlikely. If, however, I decide to apply myself to learning to play the ukelele, 10,000 hours is probably far more than necessary.

The point Gladwell is making is that mastering a skill, or at least becoming strongly proficient in it, requires a serious application of time and focus. Some of us are more naturally inclined to learn certain things than others. I’m pretty good at learning new recipes to cook, but don’t expect me to master Japanese cuisine anytime soon. (I’m working on tamago-yaki, at the moment.)

Whatever it is you’re endeavoring to learn, remember that it will take time, patience, and dedication to get good. English, of course, is no exception.

Enjoy this brilliant weather we’re having!

Jon
