Is boxing a violent sport?

2017年11月9日 (木)

Recently Floyd Mayweather won what has been called the richest fight in boxing history. He won $100 million for defeating Conor McGregor. As many of you know, I also like to do boxing. After watching the fight, I had to ask myself if boxing is considered violent in modern society? The quick and simple answer is “Yes”, people punch and hurt their opponent. However when we think that boxing only exists as a sport with an equivalent opponent in a controlled environment, is it actually classed as violence? Both boxers are trying to test their own skill in a relatively safe environment and follow strict rules. I think boxing should be considered an art done by athletes who are abiding to the sports laws, with officials in place and the boxers themselves are trained to endure the physical requirements. Boxing when not a sport however, like outside in the streets is not controlled and therefore I would class that as violent. Compared to your average fighting video game, I don’t think boxing as sport is more violent but this just my two pennies worth!
