My wedding

2012年3月22日 (木)

Hi everyone,

Long time no see! As many of you may know, I got married in Foix, France on January 28 of this year. It was a small, informal wedding with a few close friends of my husband, Philippe. I wore a colorful dress from Cambodia and green stiletto shoes. Pilippe wore jeans and a nice jacket. It wasn’t a traditional white wedding. We wanted to have a casual wedding so we could relax and enjoy ourselves. (My family didn’t come because it is very far, but I talked to them on the phone that day and sent them a lot of photos, and they were happy for me.)

We were married at 11 a.m. by the Mayor of Foix at the City Hall. I was a little nervous! But it was a really nice ceremony. The Mayor was very friendly and he made jokes during the ceremony to make us laugh. After we were married, we went back to our house and had a party. We ate delicious food, drank wine and champagne, talked, and danced. It was so nice to celebrate with just a few close friends. We had a lot of fun!

We were very lucky because it was sunny and warm on the day of our wedding. In the evening it began to snow, and it snowed for weeks after that! If I had waited one more day to get married, it would have been cold and snowy on my wedding day! So I was really glad to get married on a bright sunny day! Our wedding was perfect! I’m very happy here in France with my husband.

I miss my students in Japan and think of you often! I hope all is well with you.

Sincerely,

Luella

Age is just a number

2012年3月17日 (土)

Hey folks, how’s it going? I’m doing fine, thank you;)

The other day I spoke on the phone with my grandmother. She’ll be 86 in a few weeks. When I asked her how she’s doing, I was really pleased by her reply. She said, “Even though I’m nearing 90, I still feel as energetic as I did 20 years ago.” I asked her if she “felt 86 years old?” She asked me what I meant. I said that I wanted to know if she felt how sheexpected she would feel when she turned a particular age.

She was silent for a moment before she responded.

Then she said that if you base your behavior on turning a paticular age (for example getting married by 28, having kids by 33…buying a house by 40) you may not necessarily be living according to your own pace. Instead, you live according to predescribed social expectations that may or may not make you happy.

The point is – You’re only as old as you feel. And if you feel old, you’re probably not having enough fun.

Speed Racer!

2012年3月17日 (土)

When I was a kid, I used to wake up early in the morning sometimes and watch television.
I liked to watch old cartoons.  I would watch all by myself, while everyone else was asleep. Sometimes a cartoon called ‘Speed Racer’ would be on.

The story is about the adventures of a young race car driver, Speed, and his friends. His rival is the mysterious Racer X, who is actually his older brother.  There was always a lot of action and excitement.  It was a fun cartoon, and I liked it very much. The Japanese name of the cartoon is マッハGoGoGo.
Have you seen it? I think it’s a classic.

Now that I am an adult, I am not really interested in in cartoons and animation.  So I had not thought about that cartoon in years, but, not long ago, an American movie company made a film based on my old favorite cartoon.  The movie was directed by the same team that directed The Matrix.  It was a fun movie, and when I watched it, it took me back to my childhood.

Carrot cake vs. cheesecake

2012年3月12日 (月)

Howdy everyone! I hope everyone is well and no one has caught a cold. This week I`ve been thinking a lot about cake. I have a sweet tooth but I`m not a cake girl, I`m definitely a chocoholic! When it comes to cakes, I always have big plans and want to challenge some amazing recipe but I always bake two cakes; either cheesecake or carrot cake. Which one is better? This week I have decided to make yet another carrot cake (the last one I made and brought into step up had too much in it). This time I`m going to be careful with how much butter I put in the mix and I might go crazy and add some walnuts. I`ll let you know how it goes!!! Hopefully this time it will be successful.
A little step up secret for you, Joe is an EXCELLENT cake baker (I steal most of my recipes from him) so if any students want some cake tips, be sure to ask him! (I`m still a beginner, but you can ask me too 😀 )

Practice makes perfect!

2012年3月1日 (木)

Hey all. I can feel winter is coming to an end and I am super excited about the coming of spring. Every year I love winter but as I am injured this year I haven`t enjoyed it as much as before. What have you been doing this winter? I heard that snow conditions have been great this year, so if you have been snowboarding or skiing, please tell me about it. I have been dying to go to the mountain all winter. As I can`t snowboard I have been spending my time doing other things. Recently I have been cooking a lot. Tonight I am going to cook a Hawaiian dish called “Loco Moco” (it seems really easy just hamburger, egg, rice and some sauce). I have also been perfecting (by practicing!) my lasagna. Last month I made about 6 lasagnas! As my mother always told me “practice makes perfect”.
Just before I go, I wanted to thank all the students who have been worried about me. Recently I have been particularly unlucky. My newest injury is my meniscus which is the cushion-like thing in your knee. Not to worry though, I am getting better and should be as right as rain soon. Thank you to everyone for your support and kindness.
