Spring?
2010年2月24日 (水)
Hello everyone,
How are you? I’m doing well, especially because spring is in the air! The last couple of days in Sapporo have been wonderfully warm, and I feel like a bear coming out of hibernation:) I know what you’re thinking, it’s Sapporo, it’s only February, and there’s bound to be another snow storm or two before spring truly appears. But it’s a nice reminder of what’s to come. And next month is March! We have a saying in English:
“March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb.” Meaning, March starts out with harsh, unpleasant weather, but it ends mild and warm. Hopefully this is true in Sapporo as well, especially the latter part! I wonder if there are any similar sayings in Japanese?
Please enjoy the “spring” weather while it lasts!
Sincerely, Luella
Take care and dont hurt yourself on the snow!!!

Hey everyone! Hope everyone is having a good week. Recently heaps of my friends have injured themselves doing winter sports. This year Im being extra careful because (touch wood!!!!) I dont want to break anything. It must be super stressful to go to the doctor in a foreign country and Im lucky that ive never really had to. So today my diary message goes out to all those with injuries…. get well soon x
Ice Fall Festival
2010年2月11日 (木)
Hey there everyone. Have you ever been to Sounkyo? I went there last week to snowboard, but the ropeway was closed. It was -15 at night, but I braved the cold and went to the Ice Fall Festival. It was very beautiful but far too cold to take pictures, so I hope you like this one!!!!
How cold is it??
2010年2月4日 (木)
It`s very cold. It`s super cold! It`s hella cold!! It`s ARTIC!!! That`s right folks – now that we`ve entered the dead middle of winter, we need an appropriate adjective to describe the low temperature. The word is: arctic. Of course, artic refers to the north and south poles of the earth – The Artic Circle and Antarctica. These places are so stupidly cold that their very names can be used as descriptors for very cold weather. For example, maybe my friend says to me, Weren`t you cold riding your bike today?, to which I`d answer, Of course I was! It`s artic outside!Despite being non-standard English, the meaning is loud and clear. So when you`re tramping around Odori this weekend looking at the snow festival, you`ll know exactly what it means when the guy next to you mutters, Damn, it`s artic out here!
Enjoy winter while it lasts, everyone: spring is on its way!
Technology and me don`t mix!!

Hey everyone! One week later and I`m STILL trying to connect my bloody computer!!!! However I dont want to give up and I FINALLY find the user manual in English, so I have a chance of understanding!!! Today Im feeling very optimisitic…..watch this space, maybe next week I`ll be able to write my diary from home rather than in the office. Anyway I hope you all have a great weekend. Might see you at the mountain 😀
